Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the single TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level names remained functional.
